Compared to last week, prices were steady with activity and demand good in all classes. The NASS Colorado Crop Progress and Condition report for the week ending August 20, 2017 states that isolated precipitation was received in several Colorado counties this past week, continuing to provide beneficial moisture but delaying fieldwork in a few areas, according to the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. A reporter in northeastern Colorado noted that hay and pasture conditions in several areas are drought stressed, with below normal yields reported for hay. Livestock water for rangeland in these counties remains critically low. A reporter in the San Luis Valley noted that some second cutting alfalfa remains in the field due to continued rainfall. Previous severe weather in southeastern counties continues to affect quality of alfalfa hay harvested. Pasture and Range conditions were rated 1 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Alfalfa crop condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Alfalfa second cutting is 92 percent complete and third cutting is 40 percent complete. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay.
