Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 9,667/4,632 Last week: 8,461/4,718 Last year: 11,753/4,234
Hay market activity slow; demand light for all classes of hay; prices steady.
Cooler temperatures continued last week and many across the state received some
rain. Severe thunderstorms and hail, up to softball sized, damaged crops in
western Kansas. Per NASS, Kansas alfalfa hay condition rated 2 pct very poor,
10 poor, 32 fair, 53 good, and 3 excellent. Third cutting was 86 pct complete,
near 83 pct last year and ahead of the 71 pct average. Fourth cutting was 14 pct
complete. According to the US Drought Monitor, counties in eastern Kansas
received a month's worth of precipitation in one week, erasing abnormally dry
conditions. Central Kansas saw an expansion of moderate drought (D1) as
continued rainfall deficits dried out soils, lowered streamflow, and stressed
vegetation. The abnormally dry (D0) category has decreased to 43.91 pct and
moderate drought (D1) increased 13.87 pct. If you have hay for sale, and/or
