Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground alfalfa movement:  Southwest/South Central

Hay market activity slowed; demand moderate for grinding alfalfa, light for all 
other classes of hay; prices mostly steady to slightly higher. Stronger 
undertones that the market will continue to firm up were noted. Milder 
temperatures arrived last week bringing with it much appreciated relief for man, 
beast, and crop, but also desperately needed rain.  Per NASS, Kansas alfalfa hay 
condition rated 1 pct very poor, 8 poor, 30 fair, 57 good, and 4 excellent. 
Third cutting was 65 pct complete, ahead of 53 pct last year and ahead of the 46 
pct average.  The abnormally dry (D0) category has increased to 50.61 pct and 
moderate drought (D1) decreased a half of a percent to 4.83 pct.  If you have

Southwest Kansas

Supreme 140.00-160.00, Premium 130.00-150.00, Good 115.00-145.00.  Stock or Dry 
Cow alfalfa, 90.00-100.00.  Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 100.00-110.00. Ground 
and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 120.00-130.00, with instances at 
130.00-140.00.  The week of 7/23-7/29, 9,518T of grinding alfalfa and 298T of

South Central Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay steady, alfalfa pellets 5.00 higher, grinding alfalfa, 
ground/delivered steady to 5.00 higher; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small 
squares 7.50-8.50/bale, Dairy, .70-.80/point RFV. Supreme 140.00-150.00, Premium 
130.00-140.00, Good 110.00-130.00. Stock cow alfalfa, 80.00-90.00. Fair/Good 
grinding alfalfa, 95.00-105.00.  Ground and delivered locally to feedlots 
110.00-115.00. The week of 7/23-7/29, 4,419T of grinding alfalfa and 609T of
