Hay Demand Remains Mixed

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, round bales of alfalfa sold steady to $10 higher, square bales steady. Grass hay sold steady to $10 higher. Ground and delivered hay steady. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets sold steady to $5 higher. Demand was good to very good for all classes of available forage, according to the USDA Market News Service, July 28. Prices given on per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Eastern/central-Premium alfalfa, large squares, $180; good, large squares, $150, large rounds, $80-$85; fair, large squares, $105-$110. Good alfalfa orchard grass, large rounds, $90. Good/premium grass hay, large squares, $115; premium, small squares, $150, good, large rounds, $80-$90. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $185-$210.
Platte Valley—Good alfalfa, rounds $80-$85. Ground and delivered alfalfa, $95-$110. Ground and delivered cornstalks, $75-$80. Dehydrated pellets, 17% protein, $185.
East River area of South Dakota—Supreme alfalfa, large squares, $145-$165; premium, large squares, $130-$150; fair, large rounds, old crop, $100. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $145; 17% protein, $150. Alfalfa meal, 17% protein, $155. Premium alfalfa/grass mix, large rounds, new crop, $115; small squares, old crop, $7.50/bale. In Iowa, alfalfa sold mostly $5 lower on varying quality, grass hay sold $5 to $10 lower. Overall quality was average this week.
Rock Valley—Premium alfalfa, large rounds and squares, $115-$140, large rounds, $115-$132.50; good, large rounds and squares, $105-$112.50; fair, large rounds, $85-$90; utility, large rounds, $77.50-$80. Premium grass, large squares, $95, large rounds, $100-$110, small squares, $100; good, large squares, $85-$87.50, large rounds, $80-$95; fair, large rounds, $70-$77.50; utility, large rounds, $62.50. In Minnesota, alfalfa grass hay steady.

In Montana, hay prices sold steady trending higher with drought conditions worsening. Sales are all new crop hay unless otherwise noted. Demand for all hay is good to very good on light supplies. Due to light sales receipts this report will be released bi-weekly until early August when heavier receipts can be confirmed. Following is the July 21 report.

Western Nebraska—Alfalfa, ground and delivered, $135. Wheat straw, contracted standing, $67.50. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.
Western South Dakota—Premium alfalfa, large squares, $150. Good wheat hay, large squares, $80. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.
In Colorado, prices were steady with activity and demand good in all classes. 
Northeast—Fair/utility alfalfa, large squares, $115 delivered. Premium grass, large squares, $200; good, large squares, $180-$190, small squares, $215. No reported quotes for all other classes of hay.
Southeast—Premium alfalfa, rounds, $170, small lot, small squares, $245, retail. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.
San Luis Valley—Supreme alfalfa, large squares, $175-$180. Good grass, large squares, $150. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.
Southwest—Supreme alfalfa, small squares, $245, small lot. Premium orchard grass, small squares, $285, small lot. Premium grass, small squares, $225. No reported quotes from all other classes of hay.

In Missouri, hay movement is light, supplies are moderate, demand is light and prices are steady.
