Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground alfalfa movement:  Southwest/South Central 
Tonnage: 10,239/4,083    Last week:  9,667/4,632    Last year: 11,825/3,387
             
Hay market activity slow to moderate; demand light for most classes of hay; 
prices steady.  Movement picked up only slightly last week with grass hay 
leading the way. Per NASS, Kansas alfalfa hay condition rated 2 pct very poor, 
10 poor, 35 fair, 50 good, and 3 excellent. Third cutting was 92 pct complete, 
near 90 pct last year and ahead of the 81 pct average. Fourth cutting was 24 pct 
complete, near 27 pct last year, but ahead of the 17 pct average. According to 
the US Drought Monitor, with the recent rainfalls, conditions returned to normal 
in northwestern Kansas along the Nebraska border and across extreme southern 
Kansas. The abnormally dry (D0) category has decreased to 36.84 pct and moderate

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered steady; movement 
slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 240.00-250.00. Dairy, .75-.85/point RFV, 
Supreme 140.00-160.00, Premium 130.00-150.00, Good 115.00-145.00.  Stock or Dry 
Cow alfalfa, 100.00-110.00.  Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 100.00-110.00 with an 
instance at 115.00. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 
125.00-135.00, with instances at 140.00.  The week of 8/13-8/19, 10,239T of 
grinding alfalfa and 765T of dairy alfalfa were delivered.  Grass hay: none 
reported. The average paid by feedlots on July 1 for alfalfa ground and 
delivered was 118.13, up .79 from last month, usage was 800T/day, down 4 pct, 
and total usage was 24,795T.

South Central Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, alfalfa pellets, grinding alfalfa steady, 
ground/delivered 5.00 higher; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 7.50-
8.50/bale, Dairy, .70-.80/point RFV. Supreme 140.00-150.00, Premium 130.00-
140.00, Good 110.00-130.00. Stock cow alfalfa, 80.00-90.00. Fair/Good grinding 
alfalfa, 95.00-105.00.  Ground and delivered locally to feedlots 115.00-125.00. 
The week of 8/13-8/19, 4,083T of grinding alfalfa and 534T of dairy alfalfa were 
delivered. Alfalfa pellets: Sun Cured 15 pct protein 150.00-160.00, 17 pct 
protein 155.00-165.00, Dehydrated 17 pct 192.00-202.00. Grass hay: none 
reported. Oat hay, large rounds 85.00-95.00 delivered. Straw large squares 
50.00-60.00. The average paid by feedlots on July 1 for alfalfa ground and 
delivered was 105.35, up 2.02 from last month, usage was 277T/day, down 9 pct, 
and total usage was 8,597T.

Southeast Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa steady, grass hay steady to 5.00-10.00 higher, grinding alfalfa 
5.00 higher, ground/delivered 10.00 higher; movement slow.  Alfalfa: horse or 
goat, 210.00-220.00.  Dairy .75-.85/point RFV. Stock cow alfalfa 90.00-100.00 
with an instance at 125.00-135.00.  Fair/Good grinding alfalfa 75.00-85.00. 
Ground and delivered, 90.00-100.00 with an instance at 110.00. Grass hay: 
bluestem, premium small squares 115.00-125.00. Good, mid and large squares 
85.00-95.00, large rounds 55.00-65.00. Brome: small squares 6.00-8.00/bale. 
Good, mid and large squares 100.00-120.00, large rounds 65.00-75.00. Oat hay, 
large squares 120.00-130.00. Straw, none reported. CWF grass mulch large squares 
50.00.

Northwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered steady; movement slow. 
Alfalfa: small squares, horse quality none reported. Goat, 170.00-180.00. Dairy, 
Premium/Supreme .80-.95/point RFV. Stock cow, fair/good 85.00-95.00. Fair/good 
grinding alfalfa, 65.00-75.00 with an instance at 85.00. Ground and delivered 
locally to feedlots and dairies, 90.00-100.00. Wheat hay 50.00 in the field.  

North Central-Northeast Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, ground/delivered, grinding alfalfa and grass hay, steady to 5.00-
10.00 higher, movement slow.  Alfalfa: horse, none reported.  Dairy .85-
1.00/point RFV, Supreme 150.00-200.00.  Premium 140.00-160.00, Good 130.00-
140.00.  Stock Cow, good 110.00-120.00. Fair/Good, grinding alfalfa, 80.00-
90.00. Ground and delivered, 110.00-120.00.  Grass hay: bluestem, small squares 
4.00-6.00/bale, large squares 85.00-95.00, large rounds 60.00-70.00.  Brome: 
Good, small squares 6.00-7.00/bale delivered, mid and large squares, 95.00-
105.00, good large rounds 70.00-75.00. Sorghum/Sudan, large rounds 60.00-70.00.
