Compared to last week, trade activity and demand moderate. Growers are readily moving first cutting hay with little resistance to price from buyers. Severe drought conditions in the majority of the state are negatively affecting grass hay yields. According to the U.S Drought Monitor for June 12, 2018, significant rainfall fell in parts of the High Plains region, while most of the mountainous areas remained dry. Thunderstorms in northeast Colorado, Nebraska, and northwest and eastern Kansas delivered between 0.5 and 3 inches of rain, helping to prevent additional drying caused by the high temperatures. 79.67 percent of the state falls in a D0-D4 Drought Category compared to 6.16 percent a year ago. Of those percentages, 51.18 percent falls into the D2-D4 categories. The NASS Colorado Crop progress report for week ending June 10, 2018, stored feed supplies were rated 8 percent very short, 23 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. 1st cutting Alfalfa hay progress is at 42 percent. Pasture and range conditions percentages are 17 percent Very Poor, 25 percent Poor, 31 percent Fair, 26 percent Good, and 1 percent Excellent. The next available report will be Thursday, June 21, 2018. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay.
