Week Ending June 1st, 2018 For this week: Both hay and straw were scarce across the sate this week. Prices remained steady for both top and bottom quality hay but were uneven for the middle quality hay. Both Large Square and Large Round bales could be found for sale however small square bales were noticeably absent this week. First cutting alfalfa was successfully baled the beginning of this week across most of Iowa. This first cutting was more than 2 weeks behind the usual dateline for first cut hay. However, the northeast quadrant of Iowa continued to receive excess rain pushing hay producers to wait even longer to make hay. Most of the first crop of hay was baled as large rounds due to the wet crop and wet ground.
