Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Hay prices continue on a steady trend with limited sales. Good quality hay held prices steady this summer because of a limited supply. Buyers are discounting lower quality hay. Straw prices continue to be strong. Connect to the Farmer-to-Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/ to place an ad for your forage need or if you have to forage or straw to sell. Contact your local county agriculture educator if you need help placing an ad. There is no charge for the service.

Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Prices are strong. Small square bales averaged $4.00 a bale (range of $1.00 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $62.00 per bale (a wide range of $27.00 to $95.00). Large round bale straw averaged $65.00 per bale (a wide range of $40.00 - $100.00).

For Nebraska, hay sold steady on a thin test. Feedlots have begun chopping silage with wet field conditions and are not concerned with purchasing hay. In Iowa, prices are steady. Many farmers may get one more cut yet this fall. Many livestock people will not quibble on prices as they remember last winter.

In South Dakota, prices are steady with limited sales plus good demand for quality hay. Many buyers are holding off hay purchases hoping for lower prices.

In Missouri, hay supply and demand are moderate with steady to weak pricing. Chopping corn silage has begun in the state.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady, with light demand and a limited supply. In Kansas, demand is slow to moderate with steady prices. Rain across much of the state has limited drought concerns and provided prairie hay to bale this fall.

In Wisconsin, prices remain strong with demand for quality hay. Hay supplies remain tight with a good supply of lower quality hay. Many farmers will harvest prevent plant acres to build forage inventory, and plant winter small grains as an early option in 2020.
