South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: Alfalfa hay steady to firm, grass not well
tested. Very good demand for alfalfa in large square bales from out
of state buyers, demand more moderate from in state buyers. The weather
has continued to work against the hay growers this week as rain and cool,
overcast days set in. The window to make high quality, dry hay,
especially in a large square bale, has been extremely narrow this
growing season which has resulted in a tighter supply of this type of
hay. Much more plentiful supply of large round bales of lower quality
hay. Very little baling of cover crops has occurred yet as the weather
has not cooperated. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless
otherwise noted.
