Week Ending January 26, 2018 For this week: Hay prices were mostly steady. Demand was moderate. Looking forward temperatures will continue in the high 30's until Thursday when a cold front will sweep back through Iowa dropping the highs into the teens. Grain movement in December in most of Iowa was mostly light to non-existant with hopes grain prices would improve. NASS reports noted the warmer weather in early December extended adequate hay supplies with livestock being able to graze fields longer than usual. However, the recent cold has forced feedlots to increase feed rations in order to gain weight. Livestock have handled the cold well, producers remain vigilant as wind chills reached negative 30 degrees in some areas. According to the Drought Monitor D1-D4 drought conditionsincreased sharply from 8.13% last week to 15.23% this week concentrated in the southeastern portion of the state. 53% of the state is seeing abnormally dry conditions. The Iowa State Climatologist has received reports of low farm pond and well levels in southeast Iowa.
