Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 9,753/4,689 Last week: 9,818/4,531 Last year: 10,201/3,965
Hay market activity moderate; Demand is good for all alfalfa offerings, as
supplies and offerings are becoming scarce. Grass hay inquiries have increased
and prices are slightly higher for alfalfa; steady for all other classes of hay.
The weather roller coaster continues with some areas reporting highs in the high
60's last week, only to be thrust back into the teens early this week. The
National Drought Mitigation Center reports agricultural impacts from the drought
are being felt in Utah, Kansas, and Oklahoma and include decreasing hay and
soybean yields, deteriorating wheat and grazing conditions, and decreasing water
supplies with ponds and wells going dry. Some of these effects started from
moisture deficits dating back to summer 2017. According to the U.S. Drought
Monitor, the abnormally dry (D0) category is at 100 pct, moderate drought (D1)
is at 53 pct, severe drought (D2) is at 19 pct and extreme drought (D3) is at 4
pct. If you have hay for sale, and/or need hay here in Kansas, use the services
