All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack. ***Effective week of January 1, 2018, Report Name change and the addition of a Western Region. *** Compared to two weeks ago: All classes of hay steady to firm, straw 10.00 higher. Demand moderate to good as cold weather along with snow cover is increasing the need from cattle producers for forage and straw. There is good inquiry reported from hay users but there is some resistance to pay the asking prices. With the low cost of corn in the ration cattle producers would like to buy hay cheaper but a dry summer limited tonnage produced last year. The current price for milk is limiting what dairymen are willing to pay for hay. Hay is in strong hands as hay producers are content to sit firm on their asking prices. Temperatures in the single digits above zero, finally this week, after being 20-30 below zero last weekend. This weather made hay hauling difficult. As a result of winter weather conditions, cows on stalk fields are now being hay fed. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.
