Compared to last week, trade activity light on moderate demand. The bulk of trade activity is for horse quality hay. Small square buyers are showing little resistance at the current asking prices. Dairy and feeder cattle hay markets are slow as producers are trying to push the market prices up for 3rd and 4th cutting. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor’s High Plains Drought Summary for September 18, 2018, exceptional drought (D4) was added to southeast and central Mesa County, and Delta County in western Colorado. Record low snowpack this winter and near-record high evaporative demand this summer have led to rapidly depleting water supplies. According to the NASS Colorado Crop Progress report for week ending September 16, 2018, stored feed supplies were rated 5 percent very short, 12 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. 3rd cutting alfalfa progress is at 84 percent, 4th cutting 23 percent. Pasture and range conditions percentages are 26 percent Very Poor, 21 percent Poor, 22 percent Fair, 29 percent Good, and 2 percent Excellent. The next available report will be Thursday, September 27, 2018. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay.
