Week ending 09/21/2018 Fall officially arrives this week even though record or near record temperatures this week have not felt much like it. A drive through the country does however reflect that story as fall hay cutting and corn harvest are in full swing. Hay prices continue to find some weakness as producers are adding to their supplies many sellers have added that they are still moving hay but not as quickly as just a few weeks ago. It seems many cattlemen are waiting to see how much they can bale or how much grass will grow before frost with hopes prices will decline. On the flip side many sellers are content to wait as they feel overall supplies or lack of will justify as feeding picks back up once feeding season arrives. Hay demand is moderate to good, supply is light and hay prices are steady to slightly weak. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/ (All prices f.o.b. and per ton unless specified and on most recent reported sales price listed as round bales based generally on 5x6 bales with weights of approximately 1200-1500 lbs).
