Compared to last week, trade activity light on moderate to good demand.
Buyer interest is in small squares for horse hay markets. Dairy and feeder
cattle hay markets are slow. Below average water available for irrigation this
year, coupled with extreme drought conditions on the western half of the state
have substantially impacted hay prices throughout this haying season with upward
pressure. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor’s September 25, 2018 two-week
comparison for Colorado, the D0 category was extended to include all of Morgan
county and parts of Weld and Washington counties. The D3 category was increased
to include most of Moffat and Rout counties. According to the NASS Colorado
Crop Progress report for week ending September 23, 2018, stored feed supplies
were rated 7 percent very short, 18 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 4
percent surplus. 3rd cutting alfalfa progress is at 90 percent, 4th cutting 32
percent. Pasture and range conditions percentages are 28 percent Very Poor, 23
percent Poor, 23 percent Fair, 24 percent Good, and 2 percent Excellent. The
next available report will be Thursday, October 4, 2018. All prices reported
are FOB at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots
of hay. If you have hay for sale or need hay, use the services of the Colorado
Department of Agriculture website: www.coloradoagriculture.com.
