Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
The hay market is stronger. Hay demand has increased across all classes of hay. Weather may have caused concern and brought buyers to the table with colder temperatures and snow in some areas. Many markets report limited supply of top quality hay.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady, demand has picked up some in the state. Weather has delayed harvest in the state and many farmers are attempting to get grains harvested. For Iowa, top quality hay is in short supply and a lot of buyers went home empty handed. It appears good hay has been shedded and sellers are waiting for higher prices before they will bring it to the market.

In South Dakota, all classes of hay provided steady prices and good demand. Dairy prices continue to impact the hay market. There is a demand for quality grass hay as cattlemen wean calves and move them to feed yards.

For Missouri, hay prices are steady, with light to moderate demand and supply. Horse owners continue to search for a few small square bales. Dairy prices are impacting hay demand. Many producers are wondering where is fall as wintery weather is upon us.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady, with light to moderate demand and supply.
In Wisconsin, top quality alfalfa hay was not available at the market. Low quality hay had good demand compared to past weeks. Colder weather and some snow has motivated farmers to purchase hay.

Straw prices were steady this past week. Small square bale straw price was stronger at $3.50 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw was steady at $42.00 per bale (a wide range of $20.00 to $70.00). Large round bale straw averaged $39.00 per bale (a wide range of $33.00 - $70.00). There is demand for straw and many markets don’t have a supply. Straw quality does impact price.
