South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: Supreme quality alfalfa steady, other qualities
10.00 to 20.00 higher with the full advance on the lower end of hay qualities.
Grass hay fully steady. Straw steady. Good demand for all qualities of
alfalfa, very good demand for high quality grass hay. Dairymen continue their
search for hay of quality high enough to be suitable for their rations, however
their poor margins are keeping them from paying more for hay. As bawling calves
move into feedyards the need for high quality grass hay is high. Crop harvest
progressed well this week, the warmer and drier weather allowed for some baling
of corn stalks but fields are still muddy in places which isn’t allowing many
bales to be made yet. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise
noted.
