Week ending 1/18/2019
It is hard to believe just a few short months ago the state was suffering
from drought conditions. Over the last week many areas of the state saw
snowfall totals much higher than what has been seen in many years. The
largest official total was just over 20 inches with many in the central and
northeast seeing around 15. The heavy wet snow resulted in a few reports of
barns that did not survive as well. Most areas in the southern third of the
state seen more rain which added to the already boot deep mud. Moving hay
has become quite an issue due to the mud. Several farmers are looking for
hay as inventories on hand are dwindling. The problem is trying to pencil
out how to make it work given hay cost and trucking to get it from areas it
can be found. The supply of hay light to moderate. Hay prices are steady.
Hay demand is moderate to good. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a
hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a
directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay
