Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Hay prices have dropped about $20.00 per ton in this report. Contributing factors are reduction in auctions during the summer months, new crop hay coming into the market, and farmers too busy to buy hay. If you are looking to buy or sell forage, connect to the Farmer-to-Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/ to place an ad for your needs or what you have to sell. Contact your local county agriculture agent if you need help placing an ad. There is no charge for the service.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady, buyer inquiry was good. 2019 is a replay of 2018 as many are waiting for some dry days to bale hay. In Iowa, new crop hay is coming to the market. New crop has a wide range of quality related to rainfall either pre or during harvest. Many are considering buying early to avoid being caught short a second year.

In South Dakota, prices are steady with moderate sales. Hay is being baled and has eased some concerns while providing stability to the market.

In Missouri, prices are steady, with improving supplies and a moderate demand. Farmers continue to battle weather to get hay baled.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were lower with light demand and very little hay available.

In Kansas, market activity and demand are slow to moderate. Prices are variable to trending downward.

In Wisconsin, prices remain strong with demand for hay. Many are planting forages and corn for silage as there has been a delayed spring and there is a need to replenish forage supplies in the state.
Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw. Prices were steady with a scarce supply of straw. Small square bales averaged $3.70 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $54.00 per bale (a wide range of $35.00 to $125.00). Large round bale straw averaged $44.00 per bale (a wide range of $30.00 - $55.00). Wheat straw may demand a slightly higher price and straw quality does affect the price.
