Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement:   Southwest/South Central 
Tonnage: 7,357/5,604    Last week: 7,719/5,140   Last year: 7,883/4,582
             
Hay market trade activity remains slow, demand is slow but there has been 
increasing inquiries from eastern states, while prices remain steady. Rains 
continued off and on over a good portion of the state. Southeastern Kansas was 
hit the hardest in the month of May, with total rain accumulation ranging 
between 15 to 30 inches. Due to wet fields putting up hay has been at a virtual 
standstill. With limited supplies of old crop hay on hand, farmers are eager to 
fill their barns.  Forecast currently calls for drier conditions, perhaps, next 
week. A lot of good hay ground has been under water and so producers will need 
to remain vigilant for flood debris. If you have any extra hay to sell and/or

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered, grass hay steady, movement 
slow. Alfalfa: horse, premium small squares 250.00-270.00. Alfalfa: Dairy 1.00-
1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-210.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-
170.00. Stock or Dry Cow 185.00-195.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, old crop 
160.00-170.00, new crop 125.00-145.00. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots 
and dairies, old crop 195.00-205.00, new crop 160.00-170.00; Bluestem, premium 
small squares 140.00-150.00; Sudan: large rounds 70.00-80.00; Cornstalks: Large

Premium 175.00-200.00, Good 165.00-175.00. Stock cow, 170.00-180.00. Fair/Good 
grinding alfalfa, old crop 140.00-150.00, new crop 120.00-130.00. Ground and 
delivered locally to feedlots old crop 165.00-175.00, new crop 145.00-155.00; 
Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 pct protein 210.00-220.00, 17 pct protein 220.00-

cow 170.00-180.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, none reported. Ground and 
delivered, none reported; Grass hay: Bluestem, premium small squares 140.00-
150.00. Good, mid squares 125.00-135.00, good large squares, 110.00-120.00, 
large rounds 100.00-115.00. Brome, good, small squares none reported, mid to 
large squares 140.00-155.00, large rounds 125.00-135.00; Sudan: large rounds 
75.00-85.00; Wheat Straw: mid and large squares 75.00-100.00. Mulch: large 
rounds 50.00-60.00. The week of 5/26-6/01, 1,042T of grass hay was delivered.

Northwest Kansas

Alfalfa: Horse or goat, 220.00-230.00. Dairy, Premium/Supreme 1.00-1.05/point 
RFV. Stock cow, fair/good 160.00-165.00. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, 140.00-
150.00.  Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 150.00-160.00.

North Central-Northeast Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered, grass hay, steady movement 
slow. Alfalfa: horse, premium small squares 9.00-10.00/bale. Dairy 1.00-
1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-210.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-
170.00. Stock Cow, 195.00-200.00. Fair/Good, grinding alfalfa, 135.00-145.00. 
Ground and delivered 160.00-170.00. Grass hay: Bluestem, small squares 8.00-
8.50/bale, large squares 120.00-130.00, large rounds 100.00-110.00. Brome, small 
squares 8.50-9.50/bale, large squares 145.00-155.00, large rounds 100.00-110.00
