Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement:   Southwest/South Central 
Tonnage: 8,292/4,975   Last week: 7,357/5,604    Last year: 9,478/5,083
             
Hay market trade activity remains slow, demand is slow but there has been 
increasing inquiries, while prices remain mostly steady for old crop. New crop 
pricing seems to be all over the map, as folks are in a quandary on how to price 
this first cutting. One thing for certain, now that the sun is shining, is that 
producers are in the field frantically swathing and baling hay before the next 
rain shower.  Most have reported this current cutting is going directly to the 
grinder market.  Very little dairy quality hay has been baled yet. There has 
been a lot of hay wrapped this year due to the lack of good hay curing weather.

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, old crop grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered, grass hay steady, 
new crop ground and delivered steady to 20.00 lower, movement slow. Alfalfa: 
horse, premium small squares 250.00-270.00. Alfalfa: Dairy 1.00-1.05/point RFV, 
Supreme 185.00-210.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-170.00. Stock or Dry 
Cow old crop 185.00-195.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, old crop 160.00-170.00, 
new crop 125.00-145.00. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 
old crop 195.00-205.00, new crop 140.00-160.00; Bluestem, premium small squares 
140.00-150.00; Triticale: large rounds, new crop 60.00-80.00/bale; Sudan: none 
reported; The week of 6/02-6/08, 8,292T of grinding alfalfa and 800T of dairy 
alfalfa were delivered. 

South Central Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, alfalfa pellets, grass hay, old crop grinding alfalfa, and 
ground/delivered steady; new crop ground and delivered steady to 5.00 lower; 
movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 200.00-210.00. Dairy, 1.00-
1.10/point RFV, Supreme 195.00-215.00, Premium 175.00-200.00, Good 165.00-
175.00. Stock cow, old crop, 170.00-180.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, old crop 
140.00-150.00 with an instance of 150.00-160.00, new crop 120.00-130, with an 
instance at 140.00. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots old crop 165.00-
185.00, new crop 140.00-150.00; Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 pct protein 
210.00-220.00, 17 pct protein 220.00-230.00, Dehydrated 17 pct 285.00-295.00;

Southeast Kansas

slow.  Alfalfa: horse or goat, 220.00-240.00.  Dairy 1.00-1.05/point RFV. Stock 
cow 170.00-180.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, none reported. Ground and 
delivered, none reported; Grass hay: Bluestem, premium small squares 140.00-
150.00. Good, mid squares 125.00-135.00, good large squares, 110.00-120.00, 
large rounds 100.00-115.00. Brome, good, small squares none reported, mid to 
large squares 140.00-155.00, large rounds 125.00-135.00; Sudan: large rounds 
75.00-85.00; Oat hay, mid squares 60.00/bale; Wheat Straw: mid and large squares 
75.00-100.00. Mulch: large rounds 50.00-60.00. The week of 6/02-6/08, 923T of 
grass hay was delivered.

Northwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered steady, movement slow. 
Alfalfa: Horse or goat, 220.00-230.00. Dairy, Premium/Supreme 1.00-1.05/point 
RFV. Stock cow, fair/good 160.00-165.00. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, 140.00-
150.00.  Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 150.00-160.00.

North Central-Northeast Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered, grass hay, steady movement 
slow. Alfalfa: horse, new crop, premium small squares 9.50-10.50/bale. Dairy 
1.00-1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-210.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-
170.00. Stock Cow, old crop, 195.00-200.00. Fair/Good, old crop, grinding 
alfalfa, 135.00-145.00. Ground and delivered 160.00-170.00. Grass hay: Bluestem, 
small squares 8.00-8.50/bale, large squares 120.00-130.00, large rounds 100.00-
110.00. Brome, small squares 8.50-9.50/bale, large squares 145.00-155.00, large 
rounds 100.00-110.00 with an instance at 115.00-120.00; Sudan: large rounds 
80.00-90.00; Wheat Straw: mid squares 80.00-90.00, and large rounds 60.00-70.00.  
The week of 6/02-6/08, 434T of grinding alfalfa and 400T of dairy alfalfa were 
delivered.
