Colorado Hay Report

   Compared to last week, trade activity light.  Demand very good on light trade 
activity for grass hay due to tight supplies.  Limited supply of Dairy quality 
alfalfa hay.  The bulk of trade activity this week has been for Retail/Stable 
quality hay.  According to the U.S. Drought Monitor for March 6, 2018, Southern 
parts of the Plains (above central Texas) experienced another week with little 
or no precipitation, prompting large-scale deterioration across the Texas and 
Oklahoma Panhandles, northeastern New Mexico, and central and western Kansas. 
This results in a broad area of D3 as noted in the South region write-up, with 
D1 and D2 areas also expanding northward through parts of central Kansas and 
east-central Colorado.  The USDA NRCS National Water and Climate Center’s 
Colorado SNOTEL Snow/Precipitation Update Report for Thursday, March 8, 2018 has 
the Gunnison River Basin Snow Water Equivalent at 60 percent, the Upper Colorado 
River basin at 80 percent, the South Platte River Basin at 84 percent, the 
Laramie and North Platte River Basins at 88 percent, the Yampa and White River 
Basins at 79 percent, the Arkansas River Basin at 60 percent, the Upper Rio 
Grande Basin at 53 percent and the San Miguel, Dolores, Animas and San Juan 
River Basins at 52 percent as a percent of the median of all SNOTEL sites in 
each basin compared to previous years.  The next available report will be 
Thursday, March 15, 2018.  All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn
