Nebraska Hay Summary

Week Ending March 02, 2018

Compared to last week, alfalfa hay sold fully steady to 5.00 higher.
Grass hay sold fully steady. Ground and delivered hay steady to 5.00
higher and Dehy pellets steady. Demand was good to very good across the
state with quite a lot of out of state interest trying to procure hay.
Very cold weather prevailed in a large area this winter and livestock
owners of all kinds have used a lot of their feed resources up and
continue to look for more hay to help get their animals to summer grass.
Several contacts stated on this week’s call they are sold out of hay. Hay
clearance hasn’t been this good in Nebraska since 2012-2013 when a big
area of the Midwest was very dry. Some ranchers and bigger producers
with available cash flow are stockpiling hay for future use in case the
spring rains are slow to come. There has been some inquiry about “new
crop” alfalfa and where it may be priced as some potential buyers are
trying to lock in a price. All sales are dollars per ton FOB the field or
hay barn, unless otherwise noted.
