Iowa Hay Summary

Week Ending March 02, 2018

For this week: Hay prices trended 10.00 to 20.00 higher. Demand was very good on higher quality
Alfalfa. Some buyers wonder about ice damage to hay fields for the coming crop season, due to ice
storms the previous weeks. Temperatures starting off the weekend will be in the 50's lowering
as the week progresses, with the possibility of snow showers early in the week.

Iowa experienced extreme temperature flucuations in temperature for the second month in a row
with temps ranging from below 0 to 50+ degrees. Grain movement picked up this month as grain
prices increased. Livestock producers have been busy with calving. Overall, livestock conditions
were reported as normal with some reports of stress on livestock due to the large temperature
swings. Ice in feedlots made them hazardous and slowed down movement.

According to the Drought Monitor 26.95% of Iowa is seeing abnormally dry conditions, down
significantly from 41.59% the previous week. Improvements were also made in southern Iowa as
precipitation deficits recovered and the thawing of topsoil conditions allowed the recent rains
to replenish soil moisture conditions. All prices FOB per ton unless otherwise noted.
