Compared to last week: All classes traded steady with very good demand.
According to the NASS Acreage report 6/29/18, California all hay area harvested
for 2018 is 1,050,000 acres versus 2017 number of 1,100,000 acres with the
United States 2018 is at 55,068,000 acres versus 2017 at 53,784,000 acres.
According to the NASS Crop Progress Report 7/2/18, in the beginning of the week,
coastal temperatures were much cooler than the interior areas as an onshore flow
helped to keep temperatures to near seasonal levels. Interior areas experienced
much hotter temperatures as high pressure built off the coast. By midweek, a
weak upper level trough of low pressure brought a gradual cooling trend for the
interior areas. This again brought temperatures to near seasonal levels. As the
upper level trough moved on to the east, high pressure built up leading into the
weekend. This brought dry northwesterly winds to the region, prompting a rise in
temperatures. Temperatures hit the triple digits in interior areas in northern
California, Central Valleys, and southeastern deserts. Temperature highs for
the week ranged from 60s to low 100s along the coast, 80s to lower 90s in the
mountains, 90s to upper 100s in the valley, and 90s to lower 110s in the desert.
Temperature lows ranged from the lower 40s to 50s in the mountains, 40s to 60s
along the coast, 50s to upper 60s in the valley, and upper 50s to mid 70s in the
desert. Wheat was still green in Modoc and Siskiyou counties. Corn and potatoes
were harvested in San Joaquin, and alfalfa was cut. Alfalfa, summer beans and
cotton were irrigated in Tulare. Corn for silage planting was nearly complete.
Hay is reported FOB the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Regions are
defined at bottom of report.
