Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground alfalfa movement:   Southwest/South Central

Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Prices mostly steady to firm 
for alfalfa and grass hay, on a light test. Demand remains very good for all 
hay types. Yields for both alfalfa and grass hay continue to be reported as 
below average. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, dryness led to some 
deterioration in Kansas, where extreme drought expanded into a larger part of 
the northeast.  The abnormally dry (D0) category is at 17 pct, moderate 
drought (D1) is at 27 pct, severe drought (D2) is at 23 pct, and extreme 
drought (D3) is at 6 pct. Per NASS, pasture and range conditions rated 7 
percent very poor, 21 poor, 39 fair, 30 good, and 3 excellent. If you have

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground/delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to 
5.00 lower; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, premium small squares 280.00-
300.00. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-200.00, Premium 170.00-
195.00, Good 160.00-170.00. Stock or Dry Cow alfalfa, 140.00-155.00.  
Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 150.00-170.00. Ground and delivered locally to 
feedlots and dairies, 185.00-200.00. Grass hay: pasture mix small squares 
8.00-9.00/bale. Cornstalks: Large round 60.00-70.00, ground and delivered 
95.00-105. The week of 7/1-7/7, 8,747T of grinding alfalfa and 1,275T of 
dairy alfalfa were delivered. 

South Central Kansas

steady; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 190.00-200.00. Dairy, 
1.00-1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-200.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 
160.00-170.00. Stock cow alfalfa, 145.00-160.00 delivered. Fair/Good grinding 
alfalfa, 135.00-155.00 with an instance at 170.00-180.00. Ground and 
delivered locally to feedlots 170.00-180.00 with an instance at 195.00. 
Alfalfa pellets: Sun Cured 15 pct protein 195.00-210.00, 17 pct protein

155.00. Ground and delivered, none reported. Grass hay: bluestem, premium 
small squares 120.00-130.00. Good, mid and large squares 100.00-115.00 with 
instances at 120.00-135.00, large rounds 100.00-110.00 with an instance at 
120.00; Brome: small squares none reported. Good, mid and large squares 
125.00-135.00, large rounds 105.00-115.00. Oat hay, mid squares 150.00-
