Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 9,487/5,827 Last week: 9,288/5,684 Last year: 10,444/4,414
Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Demand remains very good for all
hay types. Producers have reported that here has been a significant increase in
the number of acres planted to Sudan. Yields for both alfalfa and grass hay
continue to be reported as below average. Prices mostly steady to firm for
alfalfa and steady to 10.00 higher for grass hay. Folks were busy putting up hay
this past week, while also trying to remain cool in the 100- degree heat. Other
lucky producers were experiencing rain delays. According to the U.S. Drought
Monitor, two inches or more of rain was measured across the western two-thirds
of Kansas, with a total accumulation of 5 inches or more received in some areas
in the southwest. With the heavy rains missing eastern Kansas, the week ended
drier than normal there, further increasing precipitation deficits in northeast
Kansas and expanding the D0 to D2 drought categories in eastern Kansas. The
abnormally dry (D0) category is at 18 pct, moderate drought (D1) is at 30 pct,
severe drought (D2) is at 18.5 pct, and extreme drought (D3) is at 7 pct. Per
NASS, pasture and range conditions rated 6 percent very poor, 19 poor, 41 fair,
30 good, and 4 excellent. If you have hay for sale, and/or need hay here in
