Week ending 07/13/2018 Dry and hot continue to be the theme in the state. Although the overall percentage of the state listed on the drought monitor has not changed much in the last couple of weeks; the severity of the drought has increased. Just over 8 percent of the state is now listed as D3 or extreme drought. Reports of farmers having to feed hay are becoming way to common and as is reports of increased culling of cattle herds as farmers try to figure out how to make grass last just a little longer. After several weeks of unconfirmed reports of prices which anyone would have to say is pretty expensive those reports were confirmed multiple times this week. There is still hay being sold at what some are referring to as “last years” prices but regardless of what price level is being used one has to be in the right place at the right time because most hay is not staying on the market for very long before it is sold. Hay supplies are light. Demand is good to very good. Hay prices are steady to sharply higher. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/ (All prices f.o.b. and per ton unless specified and on most recent reported sales price listed as round bales based generally on 5x6 bales with weights of approximately 1200-1500 lbs).
