Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground alfalfa movement:   Southwest/South Central

Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Prices mostly steady to firm for 
alfalfa and steady to 5.00 higher for grass hay, on a light test. Demand remains 
very good for all hay of types. Producers across the state are busy baling 
everything they can.  The state seems to have flip-flopped in terms of 
precipitation received this summer.  According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, An 
active thunderstorm pattern helped to bring ample precipitation to portions of 
western Kansas. Eastern Kansas remained dry and severe drought expanded through 
northeast Kansas and was introduced into southeast Kansas while moderate drought 
expanded as well. Southwest Kansas had a full category improvement to drought 
conditions this week as the recent wetness has helped improve drought in this 
part of the state. The abnormally dry (D0) category is at 13 pct, moderate 
drought (D1) is at 28 pct, severe drought (D2) is at 20 pct, and extreme drought 
(D3) is at 6 pct. Per NASS, pasture and range conditions rated 8 percent very 
poor, 23 poor, 40 fair, 27 good, and 2 excellent. If you have hay for sale,

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, steady, ground/delivered steady to 5.00 higher, 
grinding alfalfa steady to 10.00 higher; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, premium 
small squares 280.00-300.00. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-200.00, 
Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-170.00. Stock or Dry Cow alfalfa, 140.00-
155.00.  Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 170.00-180.00. Ground and delivered locally 
to feedlots and dairies, 190.00-200.00 with an instance at 210.00-220.00. Grass 
hay: pasture mix small squares 8.00-9.00/bale. Cornstalks: Large round 60.00-
70.00, ground and delivered 95.00-105. Wheat hay: large squares, 110.00-120.00. 
Wheat Straw: large rounds, 65.00-75.00. The week of 7/8-7/14, 8,753T of grinding 
alfalfa and 1,275T of dairy alfalfa were delivered. The average paid by feedlots 
on July 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was 173.42, up 7.65 from last month, 
usage was 599T/day, down .10 pct, and total usage was 17,998T. 

South Central Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered, grass hay steady, alfalfa 
pellets steady to 5.00 higher; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares 
190.00-200.00. Dairy, 1.00-1.05/point RFV, Supreme 185.00-200.00, Premium 
170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-170.00. Stock cow alfalfa, 145.00-160.00 delivered. 
Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 135.00-155.00 with an instance at 170.00-180.00. 
Ground and delivered locally to feedlots 170.00-180.00 with an instance at 
195.00. Alfalfa pellets: Sun Cured 15 pct protein 200.00-210.00, 17 pct protein 
205.00-215.00, Dehydrated 17 pct 255.00-265.00. Grass hay: Brome large rounds

feedlots on July 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was 171.09, up 16.12 from 
last month, usage was 250T/day, up .40 pct, and total usage was 7,505.5T.

Southeast Kansas 
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered steady, grass hay steady to 
5.00 higher; movement slow.  Alfalfa: horse or goat, 220.00-245.00.  Dairy 1.00-
1.05/point RFV. Stock cow alfalfa 175.00-185.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 
145.00-155.00. Ground and delivered, 170.00-180.00. Grass hay: bluestem, premium 
small squares 120.00-135.00. Good, mid squares 120.00-140.00,  large squares 
105.00-120.00 with instances at 125.00-135.00, large rounds 100.00-110.00 with 
an instance at 120.00; Brome: small squares none reported. Good, mid squares 
130.00-150.00, large squares 125.00-135.00, large rounds 110.00-120.00. Oat hay, 
mid squares 150.00-160.00. Straw, mid and large squares 70.00-80.00. Mulch, 
large rounds 50.00-60.00. The week of 7/8-7/14, 1,309T of grass hay were 
delivered.

Northwest Kansas
