Week Ending Friday, September 15, 2017 For this week: Hay prices trended steady to 10.00 dollars higher on large and small square bales of mixed grass hay, with large rounds trading mostly steady. Trade activity is moderate, with consumers willing to pay the prices for higher quality hay. Third cutting Alfalfa hay reached 95% complete this week, over one week ahead of last year, and some producers are cutting their 4th crop per the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). According to the Drought Mitigation Center Iowa saw another dry week which led to broad development of D0 and more limited expansion of D1 to D3 conditions from 28.15% last week to 33.17% this week. Looking forward through next week a dry sunny weekend can be expected, with temperatures in the high 70's to low 80's for the highs and lows in the high 50's to low 60's. According to NASS 66% of the corn crop has reached the dent stage or beyond, which is three days behind the 5 year average. 15% of corn has reached maturity with 60% of the corn crop being reported in good to excellent condition. 47% of soybeans have started to turn color, one day behind last year. 8% of soybeans were dropping leaves. Soybean condition stayed stead with 61% of crop being reported in the good to excellent range.
