Week Ending Friday, September 22, 2017 For this week: Hay prices trended mostly 5.00 to instances 10.00 lower, straw remained steady on a very light market test. Market activity was light with some producers busy making silage.Third cutting Alfalfa hay is almost complete reaching 96% this week per the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). According to the Drought Mitigation Center Iowa saw another expansion of drought conditions from 33.17% last week to 36.95% this week, with a small area of severe to extreme drought (D2 to D3) expanded slightly. Looking forward this weekend will be warm with highs in the low 90's and lows in the 60's, next work week seeing fall like temperatures with highs in the upper 60's and lows in the upper 40's to low 50's. According to NASS 88% of the corn crop has reached the dent stage or beyond, which is three days behind the 5 year average. 30% of corn has reached maturity with 59% of the corn crop being reported in good to excellent condition. 74% of soybeans have started to turn color or beyond, two days behind last year. 31% of soybeans were dropping leaves. Soybean condition dropped down to 58% of crop being reported in the good to excellent range.
