Week Ending Friday, September 08, 2017 For this week: Hay prices trended mostly steady to instances higher on mixed round bales. Trade activity is moderate, with consumers willing to pay the prices for higher quality hay. Some players in the market are noticing a hay shortage, due to the abnormally dry summer here in Iowa this year, with some producers holding on to hay in hopes of higher prices this winter. Third cutting Alfalfa hay reached 91% complete this week, 8 days ahead of average with 35% being reported as fair and 26% reported as good to excellent per the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). According to the Drought Mitigation Center Iowa saw small expansions in moderate and severe drought in the southern region of the state up from 27.62% last week to 28.15% this week. Looking forward through next week a dry sunny weekend can be expected, with temperatures being in the high 70's to low 80's for the highs and lows being in the mid 50's. According to NASS 60% of the corn crop has reached the dent stage, which is three days behind average, with 62% of the corn crop being reported in good to excellent condition. 18% of soybeans have started to turn color, five days behind last year. Soybean condition improved slightly with 61% of crop being reported in the good to excellent range.
