Wyoming, Western Nebraska, and Western South Dakota Hay Report

   Compared to last week, prices were mostly steady with demand good in all 
regions.  The NASS Wyoming Crop Progress and Condition report for the week 
ending September 3, 2017 states that a reporter from North Central Wyoming 
indicated that it has been hot, windy, and dry with several fires which have 
burned thousands of acres.  A reporter from South Central Wyoming indicated that 
they are back to hot and dry conditions and cattle are being moved off summer 
pastures.  They also indicated that haying is almost wrapped up for the season.  
A reporter from Southeastern Wyoming reported that late summer conditions 
persist and they have not gotten rain in three weeks.  Another reporter from 
Southeastern Wyoming indicated that they have had dry conditions for the week 
with one rain event which delayed some baling.  Pasture and range condition 
rated 7 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 39 percent good, 
and 1 percent excellent.  Alfalfa crop condition is 5 percent very poor, 6 
percent poor, 9 percent fair, 69 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.  
Alfalfa second cutting is 96 percent complete and third cutting is 23 percent 
complete.  The NASS Nebraska Crop Progress and Condition Report for the week 
ending September 5, 2017 states that alfalfa condition rated 4 percent very 
poor, 9 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 42 percent good, and 13 percent 
excellent.  Alfalfa third cutting was 96 percent complete and fourth cutting was 
38 percent complete.  Pasture and range condition rated 5 percent very poor, 20 
percent poor, 44 percent fair, 27 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.  The 
NASS South Dakota Crop Progress and Condition Report for the week ending 
September 5, 2017 states that alfalfa condition rated 30 percent very poor, 37 
percent poor, 20 percent fair, and 13 percent good.  Alfalfa second cutting was 
78 percent complete, third cutting was 47 percent complete.  Pasture and range 
condition rated 29 percent very poor, 27 percent poor, 28 percent fair, and 16 
percent good.  All prices dollars per ton FOB stack in large square bales and 
rounds, unless otherwise noted.  Most horse hay sold in small squares.  Prices 
are from the most recent reported sales.
