Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 11,249/4,434 Last week: 10,356/4,885 Last year: 8,100/4,405
Hay market activity slow; demand light for all classes of hay, prices steady.
The warmer and drier weather has allowed producers to cut a lot of hay. A few
popup showers slowed some folks out west, but not for long. First cutting
alfalfa is coming to an end. Many have started on second cutting, while grass
hay producers are busy baling fescue and brome. The NASS Kansas Crop Progress
and Condition report for the week ending June 11 states that alfalfa hay
condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 25 fair, 65 good, and 8 excellent.
Alfalfa hay first cutting was 92 percent complete, ahead of 89 last year and 78
average. Second cutting was 12 percent complete. Topsoil moisture rated 0
percent very short, 9 short, 84 adequate, and 7 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated
0 percent very short, 5 short, 90 adequate, and 5 surplus. If you have hay for
