Weekly East River South Dakota Hay Market

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week:  Hay prices have held steady with last week with very limited
reported new sales.   Demand and interest continue to be mostly moderate as drought conditions
within the state expanded again this week.  According to the latest Drought Monitor map released
on June 27th, near 91 percent of the state is experiencing some level of drought with over 31
percent of the state in Severe to Extreme Drought.  The driest counties are in the north-central
and western portions of the state.  Many cattle producers in the driest counties have been making
difficult decisions to market the older end of the herd along with weaning calves early in some
situations.  Areas of south-eastern and eastern parts of the state have received some moisture this
week with reports varying from .5 to 1.5 inches of rain.   2nd cutting of alfalfa has started and many
grass acres have been cut and baled already.  All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise
noted.
