Weekly East River South Dakota Hay Market

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: Limited reported hay sales this week. Prices continue to hold
mostly steady, with firm undertones noted by the sellers. Demand light, with moderate to
good interest. New crop hay prices have not been established yet, as some sellers are waiting
to get test results back and most buyers are not in need to hay at the current moment. 1st cutting
of alfalfa is mostly completed in the southern half and eastern portion of the state, as warm dry
weather conditions allowed producers to get hay put up without any additional moisture on it. The
current US Drought Monitor released on June 6th, reports that 11.37 percent of the state is in
D2 (Severe Drought) while near 79 percent of the state is experiencing some level of dought conditions
(Abnormally Dry to Severe Dought). Cattle producers are starting to make some tough decisions and some
have begun marketing some cow-calf pairs as some pastures are not able to sustain their normal stocking
rates this year. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.
