Weekly East River South Dakota Hay Market

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week:  No reported sales of hay this week, prices
quoted are from last week.  Demand light currently.  Alfalfa hay
producers have been busy cutting and baling their first cutting across
the area.  This first cutting is later than normal for most, as the
colder than normal weather during the first part of May really hampered
growth.  Rains came to the Southern and Southeastern parts of the state
at mid-month and kept growers from being able to make a timely cut.
Dry weather this week has made it easier to put up hay without rain on
it, but a good portion of the hay is more mature than Dairy hay buyers
would like it.  Drought conditions are building and rapidly expanding in
the central part of the state.  Currently 20% of the state is in D1
(moderate) drought.  Cow-calf producers are developing plans to reduce
their numbers of cattle accordingly as the grass runs short in those
affected areas.  The Southern and Southeastern parts of the state are in
normal conditions as the rains were timely this Spring.  Hot weather
today and into the weekend is causing a lot of concern as the 15 day
forecast looks like continued dry weather.  Hay quality was better in
those drier areas that were able to cut on time but without rain,
regrowth will be limited.  All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless
otherwise noted.
