Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 10,093/5,108 Last week: 11,372/4,744 Last year: 9,671/3,906
Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Demand remains moderate and
prices have remained steady for all hay types. After surviving the freezing
temperatures of early last week, the weekend warmed up nicely. Unfortunately,
with the warmer temperatures comes melting snow and more mud. Mild temperatures
are forecast to continue and rain is predicted, adding to the already muddy
conditions. According to NASS, topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very
short, 1 short, 55 adequate, and 44 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0
percent very short, 1 short, 71 adequate, and 28 surplus. As Mother Nature
begins to loosen her grip on winter, there seems to be a hint that some farmers
will begin to turn loose of hay they have been keeping back for their own use.
