Missouri Weekly Hay Summary

Week ending 3/08/2019

Another cold winter weather event took place early in the week as old
man winter just refuses to let go. More mild temperatures with rain are
in the forecast for the weekend. Not that anyone needs any moisture
currently but the liquid form does sound a bit more appealing.
Surprisingly there have been a few reports from around the state of
farmers pulling fertilizer buggies over frozen ground. There is some
question as to how effective that will actually be given the ground
conditions but fears of long term mud once temperatures actually warm are
enough to make some take the risk of applying now opposed to maybe not at
all. A news release from the University of Missouri this week highlighted
problems of high nitrate levels in hay, which are causing serious
problems for some herds. Hay supplies are light, demand is moderate and
hay prices are steady. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay
directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or to view
the directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of
