South Dakota Weekly Hay Summary

All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.

Compared to last week: All classes of hay steady to firm. Very
good demand for all types of hay as the long, very cold winter has caused
cattle to require more forage to maintain their body temperature. Very
good demand for straw and corn stalks as the need for bedding has been
greatly increased by the recurrent snowstorms. Supplies of hay are
tightening across the region with supplies the lowest East River. There
is also a good demand from out of state buyers where stocks are low as
well. Another large snowstorm in the forecast for the weekend with
more snow again later in the week. Cattle producers are looking forward
to more seasonal temps but are concerned about the mud that will come
with it, which is also pushing demand for cornstalks. All hay and straw
sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.
