Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Hay prices were on a steady to weaker tone this week. Hay prices have weakened and quality of the hay at auction has decreased. There is a wider range of prices and some hay coming to the auctions that may have a few years on the fence row or in storage. If you are looking to buy or sell forage connect to the Farmer to Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/ to place an ad for your needs or what you have to sell. There is no charge for the service.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady with good demand. Reports of less calls for hay this week. Spring weather is handicapping hay movement. In Iowa, top quality alfalfa demands top dollar while middle range quality hay prices are drifting lower. There was an uptick in supply of lower quality hay.
In South Dakota, alfalfa hay sold steady to higher with a limited volume available. There was demand for all qualities of hay and good demand for bedding. Wet weather has been a problem for moving hay.

For Missouri, hay supply is light, demand is moderate, and prices remain steady. There are reports of some green grass in the field and some have stopped spring fertilizer applications because of wet weather.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady. Large round bales were in supply and little other hay packages were available. Kansas, activity is light, demand is moderate, and prices are steady with a weak undertone. Greenup is beginning, but there is a problem with wet fields.

In Wisconsin, prices are steady with demand for hay. There appears to be a greater supply at many local markets, but it is local lower quality of hay. Hay is coming off the fence rows as snow has disappeared and some old hay in mows is arriving at auction.

Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw, not soybean straw. Prices were steady and there is demand for straw. Small square bales averaged $4.20 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $50.00 per bale (a wide range of $20.00 to $75.00). Large round bale straw averaged $53.00 per bale (a wide range of $25.00 - $75.00). Wheat straw typically will demand a slightly higher price and overall straw quality does impact the price.
