Hay Market Demand and Price Report for the Upper Midwest

Demand and Sales Comments
Hay prices were steady to strong this week. Quality hay is in short supply as many auctions had little to no top quality hay available. There is a greater supply of lower quality round bales at the markets. With few options many purchased lower quality round bales as square bale options were limited. If you are looking to buy or sell forage connect to the Farmer to Farmer webpage at http://farmertofarmer.uwex.edu/ to place an ad for your needs or what you have to sell. There is no charge for the service.

For Nebraska, hay sold steady with moderate demand. Much of the hay is traveling out of state. Pasture is greening up slowly and may increase a need for purchased hay. In Iowa, there is a shortage of hay in Iowa and it may encourage some row crop farmers to consider hay production. Prices are steady with demand that may not be fulfilled.

In South Dakota, few reported sales this week as many auctions have no supply of quality hay and much is in round bales. Demand is very good. Wet conditions make it difficult to move hay.
For Missouri, hay supply is light, demand is light, and prices are steady. Some farmers are turning cattle onto grass, ending a long winter feeding season.

In Southwest Minnesota, prices were steady. Large round bales were in supply and little other hay packages were available. Kansas, activity and demand are light. Fields are beginning to green up, but need some dry weather.

In Wisconsin, prices are steady to higher with demand for quality hay. There appears to be a supply of lower quality round bale hay that is coming off the fence rows as snow has disappeared. Many are filling in a need hoping for green grass soon.

Straw prices are for oat, barley, or wheat straw, not soybean straw. Prices were steady and there is demand for straw. Small square bales averaged $4.80 a bale (range of $1.50 to $6.00). Large square bale straw averaged $45.00 per bale (a wide range of $20.00 to $72.00). Large round bale straw averaged $50.00 per bale (a wide range of $25.00 - $80.00). Wheat straw typically will demand a slightly higher price and overall straw quality does impact the price.
