Iowa experienced good weather through Wednesday this past week. Farmers
growing hay found themselves in a situation similar to the beginning of both 2017
and 2018 as demand has exceeded production of both hay and straw. Quite a bit of
forage production in surrounding states that has supplied Iowa has already been
sold, leaving livestock producers scrambling. This shortage may encourage more
row crop producers to switch some acres to hay and oat production to help fill in
the gaps forseen for 2019.
