Week ending 02/16/2018 Some roller coaster weather this week as the weekend brought freezing rain and a decent covering of ice across much of the state making travel very dangerous. Mid-week however saw another shift as temperatures climbed to short sleeve spring type weather. Even with the winter storms moisture has been in short supply and the drought monitor continues to worsen each week it seems. Hay piles have been steadily decreasing as the feeding season drags on. Missouri can change in a heartbeat and in a week flooding could easily be the topic of conversation but currently there isn’t a lot of optimism in the country as soil is just dry and some serious moisture is needed to have some pastures and hay come the new growing season. Hay movement is light. Hay supplies are moderate, demand is moderate and prices are steady to firm. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ for listings of hay http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/ (All prices f.o.b. and per ton unless specified and on most recent reported sales price listed as round bales based generally on 5x6 bales with weights of approximately 1200-1500 lbs).
