Hay market activity moderate; Demand remains good for both grinding alfalfa and
grass hay. Supplies remain limited for alfalfa while grass hay inquiries have
remained consistent. Alfalfa prices are steady to slightly higher. According to
the U.S. Drought Monitor, rains clipped the southeast and parts of south-central
Kansas with .25 inch to 1.5 inches of precipitation in the form of rain, sleet
and ice. A small area in northwest Kansas received .25-.50 inch of
precipitation. According to NASS, subsoil moisture supplies rated 26 pct very
short, 45 pct short, 28 pct adequate, and 1 pct surplus. Moderate drought
expanded into northeast Kansas due to seasonal precipitation deficits and
abnormally warm temperatures in the last month. The abnormally dry (D0) category
is at 99 pct, moderate drought (D1) is at 71 pct, severe drought (D2) is at 36

Southwest Kansas
