Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement:   Southwest/South Central

Hay market trade activity and demand remains very slow, while prices remain 
generally steady with a slight softening to old crop grinder hay. Most all 
areas in Kansas received some amount of precipitation last week and in some 
cases too much rain. According to NASS, there was only 1.1 days suitable for 
field work. Thus, corn and soybean planting is well behind last year with 
only 46 pct of corn and 7 pct of soybeans planted. Pasture and range 
conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 24 fair, 59 good, and 13

Southwest Kansas  
Dairy alfalfa, grass hay steady, grinding alfalfa steady to 10.00 lower, 
ground/delivered steady with softer undertones, movement slow. Alfalfa: 
horse, premium small squares 250.00-270.00. Alfalfa: Dairy 1.00-1.05/point 
RFV, Supreme 185.00-210.00, Premium 170.00-195.00, Good 160.00-170.00. Stock 
or Dry Cow 185.00-195.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 160.00-170.00. Ground 
and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, 195.00-205.00; Bluestem, 
premium small squares 140.00-150.00; Sudan: large rounds 70.00-80.00; 
Cornstalks: Large rounds 60.00-70.00, ground and delivered 80.00-90.00; Wheat 
straw: large rounds 65.00-70.00. The week of 5/05-5/11, 8,184T of grinding

feedlots on May 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was 191.60, down 5.52 from 
last month, usage was 675.5T/day, up 4.5 pct., and total usage was 20,271T.

Dairy alfalfa and grass hay steady, grinding alfalfa, ground/delivered steady 
with softer undertones, alfalfa pellets steady to 5.00 lower; movement slow.

Supreme 195.00-215.00, Premium 175.00-200.00, Good 165.00-175.00. Stock cow, 
175.00-185.00. Fair/Good grinding alfalfa, 140.00-155.00. Ground and 
delivered locally to feedlots 175.00-185.00; Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 
pct protein 210.00-220.00, 17 pct protein 220.00-230.00, Dehydrated 17 pct 
265.00-275.00; Grass hay: Bluestem, small squares 8.00/bale, large squares 
130.00-140.00; Sudan: large rounds 75.00-85.00; Wheat Straw: large rounds
