Week ending May 24, 2019
Compared to last week all reported forages sold steady on a thin test.
Rain and snow across most of the state this week is giving farmers some
concern if there newly planted crops will germinate of rot due to
excessive moisture and cool day time temps. Other concerns is heavy snow
in the SE part of the state may hurt yields on wheat and on the first
cutting of alfalfa. Buyer inquiry is good for new crop hay. Some reports
of prospective buyers are wanting to make contracts on new crop hay but
producers are reluctant as they don’t know how much tonnage they will
produce. Crop progress report by NASS for week May 19th, barley planted
90 percent compared to 91 percent last year, with 75 percent emerged
compared to 65 last year. Sugar beets planted at 99 percent compared to
67 percent last year and 53 percent has emerged. Corn plantings at 66
percent compared to 67 percent last year. All prices are dollars per ton
