Week Ending May 31, 2019
Compared to last week all reported forages sold steady on a thin test.
Demand was moderate to good in different areas of the state for small
squares and large bales of hay. Most areas of the state are very wet this
week with several reports of hail damage in different sectors of the
state. Some alfalfa producers are going to “clip” their alfalfa fields
after recent hail to jumpstart regrowth and hopefully will be able to
harvest first/second cutting in mid-June. Some talks of putting up balage
or haylage as weather conditions remain wet and this will help clear the
fields quickly for second cutting regrowth. Few, more reports of winter
killed alfalfa this week across different areas of the state. Another
week of rain across state has put a damper on planting. However, NASS
reports on the 28 of May, corn is 81 percent completed with soybeans only
56 percent completed. All sales are dollars per ton FOB the field or hay
barn, unless otherwise noted.
