Compared to last week, trade activity light on moderate demand. Growers are
pushing to receive 1.00/point RFV on dairy quality hay. Buyers are looking for
straw, which appears to be in short supply. Bulk of trade activity still on
small squares going to horse markets. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor’s
High Plains Drought Summary for October 16, 2018, the western flank of this
week’s rain added to the recent totals in southeastern Colorado, with 60-day
precipitation surpluses of 1 to 4 inches supporting the reduction of D0, D1, and
D2. Across the region, the recent rain and snow are helping to recharge water
reserves and soil moisture while aiding pasture recovery and improving prospects
for winter wheat establishment. According to the NASS Colorado Crop Progress
report for week ending October 14, 2018, stored feed supplies were rated 9
percent very short, 17 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 3 percent
surplus. 4th cutting alfalfa hay was at 59 percent harvested and Pasture and
Range conditions were rated 29 percent Very Poor, 25 percent Poor, 20 percent
Fair, 24 percent Good, and 2 percent Excellent. The next available report will
be Thursday, October 25, 2018. All prices reported are FOB at the stack or barn
unless otherwise noted. Prices reflect load lots of hay. If you have hay for
sale or need hay, use the services of the Colorado Department of Agriculture
