Kansas Hay Market Report

Ground alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central
Tonnage: 8,125/4,006 Last week: 8,348/3,082 Last year: 8,640/4,582

Hay market trade activity is slow. Prices steady to 5.00 lower for grinding
alfalfa and steady to 10.00 lower for feed hay, demand light to moderate. Unlike
the previous week, farmers have NOT been busy in the fields due to a slow moving
cold front that dropped an average two to nine inches of rain across Kansas.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, existing areas of dryness and drought in
east-central and northeastern Kansas were inundated by the heavy to excessive
rainfall from a slow moving system. The areas of dryness and drought improved
dramatically, with 2-category Drought Monitor improvements common. The
abnormally dry (D0) category is at 3 pct., moderate drought (D1) is at 7 pct.,
severe drought (D2) is at .72 pct., and extreme (D3) and exceptional drought
(D4) have been eliminated. NASS reported that Kansas alfalfa hay production was
expected to be down 21 pct. from last year, area for harvest down 14 pct. and
yield down .3 tons per acre. All other hay production is expected to be down 30
pct. from last year, area for harvest down 5 pct., and yield down .5 tons per
acre. If you have hay for sale, and/or need hay here in Kansas, use the services
of the Internet Hay Exchange: www.hayexchange.com/ks.php.
